Google has confirmed it will once again host a dedicated event focused on Android before its annual developer conference. The presentation, titled The Android Show, is scheduled to be streamed live on May 12 and is expected to highlight new features coming to Android 17.

The company described 2026 as “one of the biggest years” for its mobile operating system, raising expectations for significant updates and improvements.

What to Expect From Android 17

While Google has not revealed specific features yet, the event is widely expected to provide an early look at Android 17, including potential announcements about its official release timeline.

Earlier this month, Google rolled out a beta version of the update for Pixel devices, indicating that development has reached a more stable stage. This typically means the company is shifting focus toward refining performance and fixing remaining issues—making it a good time to showcase new capabilities publicly.

Possible Focus on XR and AI

There is also speculation that Google could share updates related to Android XR, its platform for extended reality devices such as augmented and virtual reality. However, since much of this technology was already introduced in late 2025, expectations for major announcements in this area remain moderate.

Artificial intelligence is likely to play a role as well, with potential enhancements tied to Google’s AI ecosystem and services.

Why a Separate Android Event?

Holding The Android Show ahead of Google I/O allows the company to separate consumer-focused announcements from developer-oriented updates.

The Android-focused event is expected to highlight features designed for everyday users, while Google I/O, taking place from May 19 to 20, will concentrate more on tools, platforms, and technologies for developers.

Looking Back and Ahead

In previous editions, Google introduced updates to design systems, device integration tools, and AI-powered features. This year’s event is expected to follow a similar structure, potentially including interface improvements and new capabilities powered by AI.
