
Anthropic has published a new document explaining how its AI chatbot, Claude, is trained to handle conversations about elections and political topics.
The initiative comes ahead of the upcoming U.S. midterm elections, as the company seeks to clarify how its system delivers information in politically sensitive contexts.
Focus on Accuracy and Neutrality
According to Anthropic, Claude is designed to provide responses that are clear, informative, and balanced. While AI chatbots are not traditional search engines, they are increasingly used by users to explore complex topics, including politics.
To address this, the company trains its models on a wide range of perspectives and encourages outputs that allow users to form their own conclusions rather than promoting a single viewpoint.
How Claude Is Trained
Anthropic explained that its models follow internal guidelines known as the “Claude Constitution,” which shapes how responses are generated.
To support neutrality, the company applies several measures:
- Training data includes content from diverse political perspectives
- Models are evaluated for consistency, accuracy, and impartiality
- External feedback is used to refine behavior over time
Restrictions on Misuse
The company also reinforced its policies regarding the misuse of AI in political contexts.
Claude is not permitted to be used for:
- Spreading misleading or false political information
- Supporting harmful political campaigns
- Interfering with voting systems or processes
To enforce these rules, Anthropic uses automated detection systems along with a dedicated team that monitors and investigates potential misuse.
Testing and Performance
Anthropic reported that its latest models performed strongly in internal evaluations.
In tests measuring appropriate responses to legitimate versus harmful requests, recent versions of Claude achieved near-perfect accuracy. Additional testing focused on resistance to coordinated influence campaigns also showed high success rates.
Focus on the U.S. Market
The guidance is primarily aimed at the United States, where midterm elections are scheduled for later this year.
While other countries, such as Brazil, will also hold elections in the near future, Anthropic’s presence in those markets remains limited. In Brazil, for example, users are more likely to rely on platforms like OpenAI for similar tools.
